The university is named after the first Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. The motto of the university is “Doctrina Mater Artium”, which means “Education is the mother of the practical arts”.

As at time of this publication, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University does not really have a specific cut off mark for courses.
This means that ATBU cut off mark is 160 for the 2025/2026 academic session’s admission exercise
Due to the high number of students wishing to study at the federal university, the admission processes are competitive and an admission is given based on JAMB score and O’level grades.

- Candidates who score exactly or above the required cut off mark.
- Candidates who chose Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University as their preferred choice of institution during the UTME Registration.

- Candidate must be at least 16 (Sixteen) of age.
